simon boothroyd
Formerly the head of Performing Arts in a city secondary school, Simon is now enjoying a less stressful lifestyle as a "gentleman of leisure" whilst still involved in the theatre, both as an actor and as a director.
Originally from Glasgow, Simon started acting in school productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operas. His first appearance on stage was in the title role of his school's production of The Mikado in 1975. Graduating from the University of Glasgow with a degree in Drama and History, he studied voice with the late Winifred Busfield MBE, of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. During his long career, he has appeared in leading roles in a wide range of musical theatre productions including the title role in the Scottish Premiere of Sweeney Todd in the Royal Lyceum Theatre, the Narrator in Into the Woods, Sam Byck in Assassins, Harold Hill in The Music Man, Alfred P. Doolittle in My Fair Lady, and roles in South Pacific, West Side Story, Annie Get Your Gun, Hello Dolly and Singing in the Rain, to name but a few. Light opera roles included Jupiter in Orpheus in the Underworld, Grand Duke Basil in The Count of Luxembourg, plus many others. He has created leading roles in the world premieres of Goldrush, Dandy Dinmont, and The Tumbling Lassie. He has performed most of the Gilbert and Sullivan baritone roles. Recently he played the role of Don Alhambra in EDGAS' award-winning production of The Gondoliers in the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Buxton. Simon has also appeared in numerous plays, including Shakespeare's The Tempest and A Midsummer Night's Dream. In 2022, he directed Threepenny Theatrical's critically acclaimed production of Enchanted April and followed it up by taking part in their productions of The Herd, then The Lady Vanishes, his fifth acting role with Threepenny Theatricals. Simon has directed youth theatre productions as part of the National Theatre Connections program and had the pleasure of watching his young company perform on stage in the Royal Lyceum. He is also a very serious supporter of Edinburgh Rugby. This year he is delighted to be treading the boards yet again with 3-T -Biography taken from the programme for Cinderella (2024) |
